Gupt Navratri Day 1 (15 July 2026): Maa Shailputri Puja Vidhi, Ghatasthapana Muhurat, Mantra & Benefits

The first day of Gupt Navratri sets the tone for the entire nine-night observance. On 15 July 2026, devotees perform Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) and begin the worship - and while Gupt Navratri is especially devoted to the ten Mahavidyas, many devotees also honour the nine forms of Durga day by day, beginning with Maa Shailputri. This guide covers the Day 1 muhurat, Shailputri puja vidhi, mantra, bhog and benefits, along with the Baglamukhi worship for which this season is best known.

Wherever a belief is described, it is presented as tradition holds it, not as a guaranteed outcome.

Who is Maa Shailputri?

Maa Shailputri is the first of the nine Durga forms, worshipped on Day 1 of Navratri. Her name means "daughter of the mountain" (Himalaya), and she is depicted riding a bull, holding a trident and lotus. She represents purity, stability and the awakening of devotion.

During Gupt Navratri, while the ten Mahavidyas hold special place, devotees who observe the Navadurga sequence begin with Shailputri - invoking a firm, grounded start to their sadhana.

Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) vidhi

Ghatasthapana marks the sacred beginning. Perform it during the Day 1 muhurat:

  1. Bathe early and purify the space with Gangajal.

  2. Spread clean soil and sow barley seeds in a small vessel (for jayanti).

  3. Place a kalash filled with clean water, adding a coin, betel nut and mango leaves.

  4. Set a coconut on top, wrapped in a red or yellow cloth.

  5. Invoke the Goddess and place the kalash on the altar.

  6. Light the lamp (Akhand Jyoti, if you can tend it safely for nine days).

  7. Take your sankalp with name, gotra and intention.

Maa Shailputri puja vidhi

After Ghatasthapana, worship Maa Shailputri:

  1. Clean the altar and place her image, ideally facing east.

  2. Offer water, roli, akshat (rice), flowers and incense.

  3. Offer white flowers, which are dear to her.

  4. Chant her mantra (below) with devotion.

  5. Read the Durga Saptashati if you are able.

  6. Conclude with aarti and prayer.

Maa Shailputri mantra

Chant this mantra on Day 1 with a calm, focused mind:

ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥ Om Devi Shailputryai Namah.

For Baglamukhi devotees observing Gupt Navratri, the Baglamukhi mantra is chanted alongside, since these nine nights are especially devoted to her sadhana.

Bhog and offerings

The traditional bhog for Maa Shailputri is pure cow ghee (or foods made with ghee), offered with devotion. White flowers and simple sattvic prasad are also offered. Giving ghee is believed to bring health and freedom from disease, in traditional belief.

Benefits according to tradition

Worship of Maa Shailputri on Day 1 is believed to bring - as fruits of faith, not guarantees:

  • A firm, auspicious start to the nine-day sadhana

  • Stability, patience and inner strength

  • Health and wellbeing (traditional belief)

  • Steadiness of mind and devotion

Day 1 and Maa Baglamukhi worship

Since Gupt Navratri is above all a season for the Mahavidyas, Day 1 is also when serious Baglamukhi sadhana and anushthan begin. Many devotees perform Ghatasthapana and then commence Maa Baglamukhi Puja or an intensive Baglamukhi Anushthan that runs across all nine nights, sealed by a havan on Ashtami or Navami. At the Nalkheda Baglamukhi Temple, Day 1 marks the start of these sacred observances.
