Due to her severe penance to attain Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati's body had become completely dark and covered in soil. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva bathed her with the holy waters of the Ganges, transforming her complexion to be as white and radiant as a jasmine flower or the moon.
