Explore The 12 Sacred Jyotirlingas

The Eternal Shrine of Lord Shiva

Somnath Temple stands as a symbol of the resilience of Hindu culture and the eternal power of the First Jyotirlinga. Located on the western coast of Gujarat, it has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, yet it remains a beacon of faith for millions.

Ancient History & Legends

According to the Shiva Purana, the Moon God (Chandra) was cursed by Daksha Prajapati for neglecting his 26 wives and favoring Rohini. To regain his luster, Chandra performed intense penance to Lord Shiva at the confluence of the Saraswati, Kapila, and Hiran rivers. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva partially lifted the curse and decided to reside here forever as Somnath (The Lord of Soma/Moon).

Historically, the temple is said to have been built in four phases: Gold (by Chandra), Silver (by Ravana), Wood (by Krishna), and Stone (by Bhimadeva).

Spiritual Significance

Being the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas, Somnath holds the highest priority in the Shiva pilgrimage circuit. It is believed that a visit here washes away the sins of lifetimes and provides mental clarity, much like the Moon regained its radiance.

Architectural Grandeur

"The temple is built in the Chalukya style of architecture, also known as the Kailash Mahameru Prasad style, reflecting the zenith of ancient Indian craftsmanship."

The current structure was rebuilt by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after independence. The shikhara (spire) rises 150 feet high, crowned by a 10-ton Kalash. The most intriguing feature is the **Baan Stambh** (Arrow Pillar), which points towards the South Pole in a straight line with no landmass in between—a testament to the astronomical knowledge of ancient India.
