Who Is Maa Baglamukhi?
Maa Baglamukhi is the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas - the ten great wisdom goddesses of the Shakta and Tantric traditions. She is also lovingly known as Pitambara Maa, because the colour yellow is central to her worship: yellow garments, yellow flowers, turmeric, and yellow offerings all carry her energy. Devotees who perform Baglamukhi Puja often wear yellow and use a turmeric mala during recitation.
The name is traditionally understood to come from valga (to rein in, to bridle) and mukhi (faced) - the goddess whose very presence bridles and stills the tongue, mind, and movement of those who intend harm. This is why she is called the goddess of stambhana: the spiritual power to paralyse hostility, silence false accusations, and halt destructive forces.
The Origin and Symbolism
According to tradition, Maa Baglamukhi appeared to calm a great storm that threatened to destroy creation - a story that captures her essential nature. She is not a goddess of aggression, but of containment: she stops what should be stopped so that dharma and peace can return.
Her iconography is deeply symbolic. She is usually depicted seated on a golden throne, holding a club (gada) raised over a demon while pulling out his tongue with her other hand. This is the classic image of stambhana - not violence for its own sake, but the decisive stilling of a harmful voice and intention. For a devotee facing slander, litigation, or an aggressive rival, this symbolism speaks directly to the heart.
Her Place in Tantra and Vedic Worship
Within the Dasha Mahavidya, Maa Baglamukhi holds a unique position as the deity invoked for shatru nashan (dissolving enmity), victory in disputes, and protection. Her worship blends Tantric discipline with Vedic ritual structure, and it is considered demanding - the Maa Baglamukhi Mantra, centred on the powerful beej hleem, is traditionally recited with strict rules of purity, count, and intention. This is precisely why authentic worship should be entrusted to trained Vedic pandits rather than attempted casually. Precision matters in this tradition, and the priests at Nalkheda are steeped in it.
